Their research takes disaster preparedness to new heights—literally—by using drones to map their university campus into a digital twin. This digital twin serves as a dynamic model, allowing for detailed simulations of natural disaster scenarios. To make this vision a reality, their PhD students are diving into the world of Unreal Engine, developing cutting-edge digital twin models. The passion in that room was palpable, and it was a reminder of how technology paired with human ingenuity can save lives.
On another occasion, I caught up with an expert friend immersed in the world of XR experiences—designing breathtaking rides and exhibition spaces around the globe. Their work doesn’t just tell a story; it places you inside it, merging the physical and digital worlds into seamless, interactive realities. Walking through a new innovation center recently, I experienced a 4D ride for the first time. The hyper-realistic sensation of flying through futuristic vehicles and navigating threat scenarios was unforgettable. But what struck me most was how these same technologies, often associated with entertainment, can also train first responders, develop life-saving innovations, and change the way we approach real-world challenges.
These encounters reveal a common thread: whether through XR, digital twins, or immersive experiences, technology is a force multiplier. It enables us to stretch the boundaries of what we can imagine and accomplish.
